Known issues on the 1996 Neon. Two recalls sit on the federal record for the 1996 Neon. In one, certain 1996 Neon passenger vehicles could develop a damaged rear piston seal inside the brake master cylinder, letting fluid seep out and weakening half of the hydraulic brake circuit, with a warning lamp on the dash meant to signal trouble first; dealers replaced the rear piston assembly. Owners submitted 611 complaints, and engine and engine cooling leads with 340, ahead of the electrical system at 93 and hydraulic service brakes at 88.
