Known issues on the 1988 944. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the high-pressure fuel line hose between the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator, which is prone to hardening and can leak fuel onto the hot exhaust system or another ignition source, risking an engine compartment fire. The second covers the front lower control arms: a manufacturing casting defect in the alloy A-arms can cause them to crack and break after mileage accumulation, leading to loss of control.
