Known issues on the 1984 944. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the rear seat belts: they were built without emergency-locking or automatic-locking retractors, putting them out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 for occupant crash protection. The second covers the cruise control linkage, where corroded metal bushings, insufficient clearance around the shaft, and unlubricated linkage points can let the mechanism bind, sticking the accelerator pedal in a depressed position and holding the car at its set speed without the driver being able to reduce it. Owners have filed no complaints for the year. The factory diagnostic and repair procedures behind both systems are here.
From a seat belt retractor inspection to a full cruise control linkage service, it keeps you on the OEM procedure for your specific 1984 944.
