Known issues on the 1983 944. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the rear seat belts, which were built without emergency-locking or automatic-locking retractors and failed to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 for occupant crash protection. The second covers the rear suspension spring plates: they may not have been properly tempered or hardened, and could crack or break, affecting lateral guidance of the rear wheel and resulting in loss of control of the car. REAR SPRING PLATES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TEMPERED AND ARE NOT OF THE PROPER HARDNESS VALUE.
Remedy
TEST TO IDENTIFY SPRING PLATES WHICH ARE IMPROPERLY HARDENED AND REPLACE AS NECESSARY.
