Fresh powertrains define the 2009 Grand Vitara. Known issues on the 2009 Grand Vitara. Four recalls are on federal record. In one, on four-cylinder models the accessory drive belt tensioner spring can break, letting the belt slip or come off and causing overheating, a charging warning or a stall. In another, the passenger-seat occupant classification sensor mat can fail from repeated flexing, so the airbag deploys whoever is seated. In a third, on manual-transmission models the gear shift rear shaft can break, leaving the gearbox unable to change gears. In a fourth, the front passenger leather seat cover can shrink in heat and humidity and confuse the occupant classification sensor. Owners have filed 14 complaints with NHTSA, most often about the air bags and the stability control system.
