This factory service and repair manual for the 2006 GMC Envoy XL is written for the four-door sport utility in Denali, SLE and SLT trim, with either the 4.2L DOHC inline-six or the 5.3L OHV V8 installed. Engine mechanical, cooling, fuel and emissions procedures are split by engine, since a pushrod V8 and a twin-cam six have little in common on the bench. Driveline, chassis, brake, climate and body circuit work is then handled once, with the specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics each of those systems requires.

Known issues on the 2006 Envoy XL. A power steering hose built away from specification carries the sharpest consequence among the five recalls on this year's record: it may fracture at full lock under braking and take steering assist with it, along with brake assist on hydro-boost vehicles. Three more share one cause, fluid reaching the driver's door master switch module and corroding the circuit board until a short can start a fire in a parked vehicle. The last covers a headlamp driver module that overheats and fails, darkening the headlamps. Complaints total 603, led by the fuel system at 245 with the electrical system and exterior lighting behind, covered here through component tests and wiring diagrams.
