Known issues on the 2003 Montero. NHTSA lists one recall for the 2003 Montero. On certain 2003 Montero vehicles, a full fuel tank combined with rising outside temperatures could push fuel past the tank leveling valve when the vehicle was parked facing uphill, letting fuel reach the ground where it could ignite; the valve was replaced. Owners have submitted 39 complaints, led by hydraulic service brakes at 7, power train at 6 and service brakes at 5, with the electrical system and gasoline fuel system at 4 apiece.
