Known issues on the 1999 C230. Owners filed 32 complaints about the 1999 C230, with the suspension drawing six and the electrical system and air bags five each. Six of those complaints reported a crash, six reported an injury and one reported a fire. Separately, NHTSA filed a recall against the 1999 C-Class line covering certain vehicles fitted with Hoppecke batteries, whose maintenance intervals could let electrolyte fall too low and lead to internal sparking or an explosion; dealers inspected the batteries and fluid levels, replacing batteries where necessary.
