1998 Ford F-800 Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1998 Ford F-800 lists three engines for the medium conventional tractor truck and straight truck, sold in a single Base trim: a 5.9L turbocharged inline-six diesel, an 8.3L turbocharged inline-six diesel and a naturally aspirated OHV 7.0L V8 on gasoline. Each engine is treated as its own subject, with procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics that are not shared across displacements, and the chassis material distinguishes between the tractor and the straight truck wherever their frame-mounted hardware and service points differ.

Known issues on the 1998 F-800. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. One concerns automatic-transmission trucks whose column shift linkage key may not be retained by its welds, so the transmission can sit in a gear other than the one indicated and the park brake may not engage. The other covers a front wheel bearing adjusting nut damaged by incorrect tools or torque, which can back off until the wheel separates. Owners have filed six complaints with NHTSA, two of them on the power train. The manual's procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics cover those transmission, hub and driveline systems.
