Known issues on the 1996 Bonneville. For the 1996 Bonneville, the recall record holds 2 campaigns. A backfire while starting could crack the upper intake manifold on certain 1996 Bonneville vehicles with a particular engine, causing a no-start and possibly an underhood fire; dealers reprogrammed the powertrain control module, and until then owners were told to keep the hood closed when starting. On certain 1996 Bonneville vehicles, 32,869 of them, a damaged capacitor in the alarm, lighting and locking module could silence the key-in-ignition and unbuckled belt chimes. Owners logged 150 complaints, 43 on the engine and cooling and 27 on air bags; 14 reported an injury, 7 a fire and 6 a crash.
