Fitment for this manual begins and ends with the 1992 Lexus ES 300 and its 3.0L V6 (3VZ-FE), so the clearances, torque figures and service intervals it gives are the ones Lexus published for this car rather than values carried over from an adjacent year or a different engine.

Known issues on the 1992 ES 300. One recall is on federal record for this model year, and it covers the hood latch. The secondary hood latch mechanism has a narrow clearance between internal parts which, over time, accumulate dust or other foreign matter and cause the latch to not engage properly; if that happens and the primary latch is not properly engaged, the hood could open suddenly without warning and block the driver's vision, which could cause an accident. Owners have filed 38 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are on record. The diagnostic and repair procedures behind that system are here.
From a hood latch that no longer catches cleanly to a front-end inspection or a routine service interval, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for this 1992 ES 300.
THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH MECHANISM HAS A NARROW CLEARANCE BETWEEN INTERNAL PARTS WHICH, OVER TIME, ACCUMULATE DUST OR OTHER FOREIGN MATTER AND CAUSE THE LATCH TO NOT ENGAGE PROPERLY.
IF THIS OCCURS AND THE PRIMARY LATCH IS NOT PROPERLY ENGAGED, THE HOOD COULD OPEN SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING, BLOCKING THE VISION OF THE DRIVER, WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
LEXUS DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH.

THE INSTRUMENTATION CLUSTER ON THE ES300, WHICH INCLUDES THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER, USES LIGHTED NEEDLES AND GAUGES. THE LIGHTING FOR THE NEEDLES AND THE GAUGES INTERMITTENTLY DIMS OR GOES OUT. THIS CAN BE A BIT FRIGHTENING AND SOMEWHAT DANGEROUS WHEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE - ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY WE CONTACTED THE LEXUS WARRANTY COMPANY AND A DEALER. THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE PART AND THAT IT WOULD COST JUST UNDER $1000.00 TO REPLACE. WE
