This factory service and repair manual for the 1987 Ford Tempo covers one engine, the naturally aspirated 2.3L OHV inline-four on gasoline, in the four-door sedan and the two-door sedan. Five trims are listed, AWD, GL, L, LX and Sport, and the AWD entry means the book must also cover that driveline. Procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics for the 2.3L engine apply across all five trims, with the AWD hardware documented where it departs from the rest.

Known issues on the 1987 Tempo. Two recalls are on federal record for the year. Wheel lug nuts can gall and seize on the studs without reaching proper clamping load, so the studs can fracture and a wheel can separate with little warning; the other recall covers aftermarket replacement fuel pumps whose diaphragm may leak and create a fire hazard. Owners have logged 74 complaints with NHTSA, 32 of them on the electrical system, 14 on engine and engine cooling and six on the fuel system. Wheel stud and lug nut torque values, fuel pump procedures, cooling system diagnostics and wiring diagrams are in the manual.
