1985 Ford Tempo Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1985 Ford Tempo pairs a naturally aspirated 2.0L SOHC inline-four diesel with a naturally aspirated 2.3L OHV inline-four gasoline engine, and covers both in the two-door sedan and the four-door sedan. Five trims are listed: Base, GL, GLX, L and LX. The manual's procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics treat the diesel and the gasoline engine as the separate designs they are, while the sedan bodies, which the two share, are covered once.

Known issues on the 1985 Tempo. Four recalls are on federal record. Two concern the rear suspension control arm-to-spindle attachment bolts, which can fracture and let the rear spindle come away from the control arm; another involves the engine control processor, which can misbehave intermittently and open the throttle unexpectedly, raising engine speed; the fourth covers aftermarket replacement fuel pumps with a badly installed diaphragm that can leak. Owners have brought 33 complaints to NHTSA, 11 on the electrical system, seven on engine and engine cooling and four on steering. Rear suspension torque values, engine control diagnostics and the wiring diagrams behind both are in the manual.
THE UNEXPECTED OPEN THROTTLE CAUSES AN INCREASE IN ENGINE SPEED WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE CAR AND A POTENTIAL CRASH.
REAR SUPENSION CONTROL ARM-TO-SPINDLE ATTACHMENT BOLTS MAY BE SUBJECT TO FRACTURE CAUSING THE REAR SPINDLE TO SEPARATE DURING USE OF CAR.
