Known issues on the 1986 Excel. Three recalls are on federal record for this model year, two of them in the brake system. The first covers the disc brake pads: there may be a loss of braking efficiency during repeated hard application of the brakes, and the vehicle may fail to conform to the brake fade and recovery portion of FMVSS 105. The second is a cotter pin in the brake pedal to brake master cylinder linkage assembly that may be missing; that pin acts as the retainer for the brake master cylinder pushrod clevis pin. The third covers the manual transmission, which may lock up from insufficient lubrication of the gears in the transmission case, and that can cause the drive wheels to seize and the vehicle to come to a sudden stop; sudden stops without prior warning can cause occupants to be thrown around in the car.
