This factory service and repair manual for the 1984 Mercury Topaz has to cover two engines that share almost nothing: a 2.0-liter SOHC inline-four of 122 cubic inches running on diesel and a 2.3-liter OHV inline-four of 140 cubic inches running on gasoline, both naturally aspirated. Fuel delivery, starting and emissions work differ completely between them, so those sections are kept separate. Two-door and four-door sedan bodies and Base, GS and LS trims share the chassis, brake and body procedures that make up the rest of the book.

Known issues on the 1984 Topaz. Six recalls sit on the federal record. Rear suspension control arm-to-spindle bolts can fracture and let the spindle separate from the arm, taking control of the car with it; two separate actions address that failure. The forward bolt holding the driver's seat back to the cushion frame can break from fatigue, dropping the seat back with the driver in it. A short in the instrument panel can overheat the headlamp and interior lighting switches. Complaints are few at 11, mostly electrical with 7. Suspension, seat and circuit work are all specified here.
