1983 Chevrolet Celebrity Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1983 Chevrolet Celebrity covers a two-trim car, Base and CL, in sedan and coupe form, with an engine range wider than that suggests. A naturally aspirated 2.8L overhead-valve V6 of 173 cubic inches and a naturally aspirated 2.5L overhead-valve inline-four of 151 cubic inches handle gasoline duty, while a naturally aspirated 4.3L overhead-valve V6 of 260 cubic inches runs on diesel. Compression testing, fuel delivery and cold starting are treated differently for the diesel, and the manual keeps those procedures apart.

Known issues on the 1983 Celebrity. Two recalls are on the federal record, and both are braking matters. The first has the proportioner valve breaking and separating from the master cylinder, which lets fluid out and takes away part of the service brake system. The second concerns parking brake cables fitted with the wrong springs, so the mechanism does not hold as the standard it was built to requires. Two owner complaints have been logged, one on the fuel system and one on the suspension. Master cylinder overhaul, proportioner service, parking brake cable adjustment and suspension specifications are all covered here.
PARKING BRAKE CABLES CONTAIN INCORRECT SPRINGS. THESE SPRINGS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS".
DEALER WILL INSPECT AND INSTALL NEW REAR PARKING BRAKE CABLE IF NECESSARY.
THE BRAKE PROPORTIONER VALVES MAY BREAK AND SEPARATE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER. THIS WOULD ALLOW BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK AND WOULD RESULT IN A PARTIAL LOSS OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM.
THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE ALL SUSPECT VALVES.
