Known issues on the 1999 A8. Four recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the driver-side front air bag inflator module: moisture absorption in the Non-Azide Driver inflator can cause the air bag to deploy improperly in a crash, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. The second covers the automatic transmission's locking cable, which can move out of position over time and let the shifter be moved out of Park even with the ignition key removed, allowing the vehicle to roll away without warning. The third and fourth both cover the steering linkage tie rods, where moisture and dust intrusion at the swivel bearing seal can wear the bearing and diminish steering control.
