Known issues on the 1996 SL320. NHTSA lists two recalls for the wider 1996 SL-Class line. One covered certain vehicles in that line equipped with six-cylinder engines, whose crankshaft pulley could crack from metal fatigue and break, leaving the car without cooling, charging or power steering assist. The other involved certain vehicles in the line whose headlamp washer pump could run dry and overheat to the point of fire after a misaligned wiper arm jammed. The 1996 SL320 itself has two complaints, both electrical, with the gasoline fuel system and engine cooling also named; two more were lodged against the 1996 SL-Class line.
