Known issues on the 1996 C220. NHTSA filed one recall against certain 1996 W202-chassis models: a light frontal knock could bend the hood latch hook so it no longer served as the backup catch, and a hood not fully closed could fly open while driving. Dealers replaced the secondary hook. For the 1996 C220 itself there are 26 complaints, mostly on the electrical system, with two each reporting a crash, a fire and an injury. Separately, eight complaints were filed against the 1996 C-Class line.
