Known issues on the 1989 Audi 80. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers the axle assembly: the transaxle's differential oil is lost over time to evaporation, and the resulting low oil level causes premature bearing and gear wear that can lead to differential failure, with the drive wheels losing power or, in extreme cases, the front wheels locking and causing rapid deceleration and loss of vehicle control. The second covers the frontal air bag sensor and control module: some sensors did not meet Audi's durability standards over the vehicle's lifetime, and a malfunctioning sensor can cause the air bag to deploy without warning, risking loss of vehicle control.
