Known issues on the 1988 Tercel. Two recalls sit on the federal record for this model year, and both concern replacement parts rather than original equipment. The first is filed under fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump, and names certain Federal-Mogul aftermarket fuel pumps sold under the brand names of Carter, Accuflow, NAPA, Truflow, Parts Depo and Parts Master, shipped between August 2006 and July 2007; the consequence on record is that a leaking fuel pump could create a vehicle fire hazard. The second is filed under exterior lighting: headlights: there can be interference with the headlamp housing if headlamp bulbs are replaced with any brand other than Koito brand bulbs, and that interference from other than Koito brand lamp bulbs is the consequence NHTSA lists. Owners have filed 9 complaints against the 1988 Tercel, and 7 technical service bulletins are on record for it.

On a car this old the work tends to run the same way: chasing a fuel delivery fault back to the pump, checking which brand of bulb a previous owner actually put in the headlamp housings, and holding the 3E to Toyota's own torque and clearance figures rather than to whatever was guessed at last time.
