This factory service and repair manual for the 1984 Chevrolet Chevette pairs a diesel with a gasoline engine in the same book: a naturally aspirated 1.8L overhead-valve inline-four of 110 cubic inches on diesel and a naturally aspirated 1.6L single-overhead-cam inline-four of 98 cubic inches on gasoline. Both went into a four-door and a two-door hatchback, sold as Base or CS. Known issues on the 1984 Chevette. Two recalls appear on the federal record. One covers the automatic transmission shift lever, whose button mechanism can wear until the lever moves between gears without the button being pressed, so a stray knock can drop the car from drive into reverse on the road. The other concerns bucket seat back locks that may not hold in a crash, leaving the backrest free to fold. One owner complaint has been logged, on vehicle speed control. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER BUTTON MECHANISM MAY WEAR TO THE POINT THAT THE BUTTON ON THE SHIFT LEVER NO LONGER NEEDS TO BE DEPRESSED TO SHIFT GEARS.
Consequence
A LEVER WITH THIS CONDITION COULD BE INADVERTENTLY BUMPEDOR MOVED FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE BY
Remedy
A NEWLY DESIGNED TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER WILL BE INSTALLED ON ALL VEHICLES.
