On certain examples fitted with the 4.0L gasoline V8, a pair of engine oil plugs might not hold up under heavy load, letting oil reach the road or draining the engine until it stalls; dealers add a retaining plate. Certain 4MATIC vehicles were recalled because a drive shaft universal joint could fracture and cut drive without warning. A third recall reached certain cars with a panoramic sunroof whose front roof panel may have been poorly bonded in an earlier repair and could separate.
