Known issues on the 2009 FJ Cruiser. Nine recalls are on federal record against this vehicle. Exterior lighting: light intensities above the maximum allowable limit could cause increased glare for oncoming traffic. Frontal air bags, sensor and control module: the front passenger seat occupant sensing system can be out of calibration. Front seat belt anchorage: the retractors for the front driver and passenger seat belts are mounted in the access door panels, and cracks can occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor. Tire pressure monitoring and regulating systems: failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance with FMVSS 138 and could lead to tire failure. Front seat heater: if damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Three more are labeling recalls — incorrect load carrying capacity modification labels could result in the vehicle being overloaded; a Southeast Toyota recall for failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims,” where a driver may overload a vehicle which may increase the risk of a crash; and a Gulf States Toyota recall against that same standard, where the labeling does not meet the standard requirements. The ninth is a Marathon recall of Superhides brand seat covers sold as aftermarket equipment, where an improperly deployed airbag could result in serious injury. Owners have filed 13 complaints for the year, and 85 technical service bulletins have been issued.
Chasing an occupant sensing fault, pulling an access door panel to reach a seat belt retractor, or servicing the tire pressure monitor after a rotation — each of those jobs is held to Toyota’s own procedure and specification for the 2009 FJ Cruiser.
