The 2004 A8 L is the first year of the redesigned flagship in North America, and a first year in the literal sense: new body, new interior architecture built around MMI, a six-speed Tiptronic and adaptive air suspension where steel springs used to be. This manual is scoped to that 2004 car, which matters because early-build parts and procedures do not all carry over from the years that follow it.

The trim and engine list comes from the same year's A8 quattro record, an entry that does not separate the two wheelbase lengths. Mechanically the long car is the short car, so engine, transmission and driveline procedures apply as written. What does not simply read across is anything the extra length touches: rear cabin equipment, rear door and window hardware, and the ride-height targets the air suspension is calibrated to, which are recorded per body rather than per model. Twenty is a small tally for a car this complex, but the entries are worth reading before you start, because complaint text usually describes the symptom from the driver's seat rather than from under the car. The system that dominates real work on these is the adaptive air suspension: struts that leak down overnight, a compressor that runs long and overheats trying to keep up, valve block and ride-height sensor faults, and a calibration step that has to be performed to the procedure after any replacement, since guessing at ride height creates alignment and tire wear problems that look like something else entirely. Beyond that, expect timing chain tensioners and cam adjuster seals on the V8, coolant leaks at the thermostat housing, MMI and control unit complaints that trace back to supply and ground faults more often than to dead modules, and front suspension linkage bushings that wear quickly under this car's weight.
First-year cars reward exact documentation more than any other, and this manual keeps to the 2004 build: diagnosis trees, removal and installation order, tightening sequences, wiring layouts, capacities and intervals, plus the calibration routines the suspension and comfort systems expect after a repair.
