Known issues on the 1998 C280. The 1998 C-Class line carries one recall, filed for certain vehicles equipped with Hoppecke batteries. The suggested maintenance interval for those batteries could let electrolyte fall too low, which speeds internal grid growth and could lead to a cell rupturing, sparking or the battery exploding; dealers inspected the batteries and replaced some.
