1997 Ford F-53 Motorhome Chassis Service and Repair Manual
This factory service and repair manual for the 1997 Ford F-53 Motorhome Chassis covers two trims, Base and XL, on the stripped motorhome chassis, both built around the 7.5L V8. The engine is a 460 cubic inch OHV unit, naturally aspirated and gasoline fueled, and it is the only one listed. Procedures, specifications, torque values, wiring diagrams and diagnostics are given for that engine and the chassis, with the Base and XL trims handled together where they share hardware and separately where they do not.

Known issues on the 1997 F-53 Motorhome Chassis. Federal records list two recalls for this model year. One is the speed control deactivation switch that may leak, overheat and burn, raising the risk of an underhood fire; the other is a cruise control repair harness whose polarity mismatch put the fuse in the output circuit, where it may not protect against a short to ground. Owners have logged three complaints with NHTSA, one each on the power train, vehicle speed control and suspension. The manual's wiring diagrams for the speed control circuit and its power train and suspension procedures for the 7.5L V8 chassis answer those points.
