Every specification in this 1996 Lexus LS 400 service and repair manual is tied to this exact build year and to the 4.0L V8 (1UZ-FE) that powers it, so the clearances, torque figures and sequences you work to are the ones Lexus published for your car rather than a close-enough number carried over from an adjacent model year.

Known issues on the 1996 LS 400. Two recalls are on federal record for this model year. The first covers exterior lighting: certain CK Motorsports replacement combination headlight, clear corner, bumper and side marker lamps sold for these vehicles are not equipped with amber side reflectors and fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, and without those reflectors the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a crash without warning. The second covers the starter assembly, where improper assembly of the terminal for the starter motor magnetic switch means an electrical short circuit can occur if electrically-conductive liquid such as road splash with deicing salt enters that area, which can result in a starter motor no-start condition or an underhood fire. Owners have filed 23 complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins are on file. The diagnostic and repair procedures behind each of those systems are here.
From tracing a no-start condition to a lighting check or a scheduled service interval, it keeps you on the OEM procedure and the correct specification for your specific 1996 LS 400.
CERTAIN CK MOTORSPORTS COMBINATION HEADLIGHTS, CLEAR CORNER, BUMPER, AND SIDE MARKER LIGHTS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON THE PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. SOME COMBINATION LAMPS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.
WITHOUT THE AMBER REFLECTORS, THE VEHICLE WILL BE POORLY ILLUMINATED, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
CK MOTORSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE NONCOMPLIANT LAMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 1, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CK MOTORSPORT AT 1-909-610-7211.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE TERMINAL FOR THE STARTER MOTOR MAGNETIC SWITCH, AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT CAN OCCUR IF ELECTRICALLY-CONDUCTIVE LIQUID, SUCH AS ROAD SPLASH WITH DEICING SALT, ENTERS THIS AREA.
A STARTER MOTOR NO-START CONDITION OR AN UNDERHOOD FIRE CAN RESULT.
DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE MAGNETIC SWITCH.
