Known issues on the 1989 XT. NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 1989 XT. The first concerns certain 1989 XT vehicles with electronically controlled, motor-driven power steering that may drop assist intermittently, making the wheel suddenly heavier and risking loss of control; revised signal and power controllers were installed. The second applies to certain 1989 XT vehicles with the electronically controlled automatic transmission: under some loads the park gear can hang on after the lever moves to reverse, and the car may then lurch; a modified pawl cures it.
