Known issues on the 1988 Van. One recall is on federal record for this model year, and it concerns the steering gear box, of the type other than rack and pinion: the steering bevel gear assembly may have water contamination which could lead to rust and corrosion. That could cause erratic steering, which could result in an accident. NHTSA also holds 2 owner complaints for the year, and no technical service bulletins have been issued.
Anyone working on a 1988 Van should treat that steering bevel gear assembly as an early inspection point: water contamination there gives no warning from the driver's seat, and the rust and corrosion it leads to are what the recall was written against.
