On certain five-speed manual, four-wheel-drive cars, the dipstick design and fluid check method could leave the 4WD extension housing bearing short of lubricant, risking seizure and rear wheel lockup; a revised dipstick was fitted. On certain 4WD vehicles with the accessory Subaru air conditioning system, 3000 vehicles in total, alternator wiring could rub on a bracket and short, possibly starting an engine compartment fire.
