This factory service and repair manual for the 1986 Mercury Lynx pairs two very different fours — a 1.9L gasoline engine of 116 cubic inches and a 2.0L diesel of 122, both single-overhead-cam and naturally aspirated — with three body styles and four trims. The two engines share a chassis and very little above it, so fuel delivery, ignition or injection, and emissions procedures are given per engine, each with its own specifications and torque values, and the hatchback and wagon bodies are handled separately in the body sections.

Known issues on the 1986 Lynx. Two recalls are on the federal record. One covers a spring-lock coupling in the fuel line that may not be fully engaged; fuel pressure, vibration and engine movement can then work it apart, and escaping fuel near an ignition source is a fire risk. The other covers the forward outboard pedestal of the driver seat track, which can fracture from fatigue and let the seat rock as the car accelerates or slows. Owners have logged 18 complaints, four on the electrical system, three on the power train and two on visibility.
