1980 Yamaha XS400 SPECIAL II Service and Repair Manual

Owners of the SPECIAL II sometimes assume the model has its own literature. It does not. Yamaha put the 1980 SPECIAL II, code XS400SG, into LIT-11616-XS-42, the same volume that serves the standard XS400 and the XS360 across model years 1976 to 1982.

Working from a shared book is straightforward once you know the code. Every specification table is broken out by model designation, so you read the XS400SG column and ignore the rest, while procedures common to the whole family are written once and apply throughout.

What you get is factory-level instruction: engine teardown in sequence with measurement points called out, transmission and clutch work, fork and shock service, brake overhaul, carburetor and ignition setting, and charging system diagnosis backed by test values. The harness diagrams are drawn as wired, which matters when chasing a fault through a connector rather than replacing parts on suspicion.
