1978 Yamaha XS400 Service and Repair Manual

Stamped LIT-11616-XS-42 by Yamaha's literature department, this is the service manual written for the XS400 as it left the factory, and the 1978 bike appears in it under the code XS400E.

Rather than issuing a separate book each season, Yamaha kept one volume current across 1976 to 1982 and folded the XS360 and XS400 SPECIAL II into the same pages. An owner gets more than the single year that way: where a component was revised mid-run, the text says which code it applies to.

Content is what a dealer workshop needed day to day. Engine and chassis work is laid out in the order the factory dismantled the machine, with torque values and service limits stated at each step. Carburetion, ignition timing and charging output have their own adjustment procedures, and the wiring diagrams let you follow a circuit end to end.
